Nowadays Japanese masks are probably most often seen at festivals or on TV, but they’re loaded with history and techniques. The Hannya mask may be among the most famous of them! It’s frequently used in Noh theater to represent the soul of a woman who has become a demon for being jealous.

Masks which are used in theater have to be designed in such a way that they can still show a range of emotion. This can be achieved in a variety of ways, but the most basic would be the actor tilting their head!

The Hannya represents jealousy, and this complex emotion can come with rage, but also with sorrow. This mask captures that rage when faced straight-on, but can appear sad and sympathetic when the actor looks down.

Whether you like the history of it, want to put on a play, or just like how awesome this looks, the Hannya mask is a pretty awesome piece. Check out the other masks available on the shop, as well!
